Washington Cemetery (African Cemetery) * HISTORY INFORMATION

Washington Cemetery
Phillips County,
Kansas

Henry and Sabra Blackman granted a deed to the Trustees of the African Methodist Episcopal Church for a tract of their land in Belmont Township. It became the site of a cemetery and rock church. The church building was destroyed by a cyclone: the rocks were moved to Speed where the church was rebuilt. Later the Blackman land became the property of the Washington Family. Dorval Wahington is the present owner (1979). Dorval and his wife, Helen, deeded the land to Belmont Township, on July 18, 1980 and moved to Denver County. There are rumors of a mass grave but no evidence of this has been found. Many of the Markers have been destroyed by vandalism and weather. This cemetery was originally a family cemetery, thus the majority of the persons interred at Washington Cemetery are related. This directory is compiled from research books and interviews and is as accurate as possible. Any mistakes are truly unintentional and it is requested that someone from Belmont Township Council be contacted to the get error corrected
