John and James Guttry, of Williamette Valley, Oregon are here visiting old friends and neighbors, after an absence of thirty-two years. The Guttry boys arrived here Nov. 9th, 1854, driving an ox team. They settled the farm now owned by H.R. Griffith west of town, and built the first long cabin on the Marmaton.

FOOTPRINTS OF BOURBON COUNTY FAMILIES 1991(page 80) James R. was born 17 July 1837, died 9 Nov. 1909 and is buried in Hatch Cemetery. James was married twice, he and 2nd wife, Nancy Hammer, also sold property in Kansas in 1866. His son, Andrew J. (Jack) married a daughter of J.M. and Margaret (Ralston) Nichols.

100 YEARS AGO (1878).....(Article in part:)
The first settlement in Marion Township was made in the spring of 1855 by Cowan Mitchell and others soon followed. The first school house was erected in 1858 by Rutherford Tennyson McCarty, Clem Buckman and David Ralston. James Guthrie and Miss Fly were the first parties married.
