Miss Cleopatra Ice came to Kansas with her parents, Adam Rufus and Ann W Ice, in 1863.
They settled on a farm 1 1/4 miles southwest of Clements. She attended common school, teaching at the age of sixteen. She followed this profession eleven years in Chase County. She attended the State Normal School at Emporia, later going to Oswego, New York, where she completed a business course. She secured a position with McKenzie, Quarrier and Company of New York City and remained with them until the beginning of World War I in 1917. She then entered the Civil Service and was assigned to clerical work at the Munitions Building in Washington DC. She retained this position until 1922, when she was transferred to other duties in the US Nations Museum. She returned to Clements in 1924, remaining a year with her sister, Mrs H B Jackson.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church since the age of fifteen. She died June 17, 1938, at the age of seventy-seven. Miss Ice was a lover of all nature-of the rocks of the earth, the birds of the air and the flowers. Her talents were many-a writer of stories and poetry that were published in eastern papers. She was good at painting and music. Her teaching was wonderful.
