ELKHART ­ Jacob . "Jake" Barkman, 73, died Friday, April 13, 2007, at Morton County Hospital in Elkhart.
He was born August 25, 1933, to Jacob B and Helen Rempel Barkman in rural Enid, Okla.
He married Susie Goossen on July 15, 1955, in Mingo. She survives.
He graduated high school in 1951 in Kremlin, Okla. He attended Grace Bible Institute, Tabor College and Emporia State Teachers College and held a Master of Education Administration degree.
He was a retired teacher and school principal. He taught school for 34 years in schools such as Ebenfeldt at Hillsboro, Navajo Reservation in Ariz., in Ingalls, and taught sixth grade for 21 years in Elkhart. He was also a principal in Walton, Valley Center and Red Rock School in Ulysses.
He was a member of Hillcrest Southern Baptist Church in Elkhart. A member of Gideons International for 38 years, a member of NEA, KNEA and a former Phi Delta Kappa.
Survivors include four sons, David Barkman and wife Eileen, Tokyo, Japan, Daniel Barkman and wife, Peggy, Soldotna, Alaska, Jacob Barkman and wife, Jennifer, Soldotna, and Phillip Barkman and wife, Miko, Tokyo; two daughters, Elizabeth Chatham, Soldotna, and Martha Hayward and husband, Steve, Amarillo, Texas; two foster daughters, Lisa Banman and husband, Corney, and Eva Loewen; 17 grandchildren, Katie, Evie, Lydia and Joel Barkman; Linda Marlow and husband, Sam; Ivan, LaDonna and Isaac Chatham; Mary Hayward; Tyler and Elyssa Barkman; Lucas, Kaitlyn and Madilyn Barkman; Lindi, Heidi and David Barkman; one foster grandson, Danial Banman; one great-grandchild; three brothers, John Barman and wife, Merl, Vadnais Heights, Minn., Ed Barkman and wife, Jean, Chouteau, Okla., and Butch Barkman and wife, Sandi, Waxhaw, N.C.; three sisters, Alvina Heinrichs, Fairview, Okla., Rubena Shaffer and husband, Ron, Pond Creek, Okla., and Tillie Westberry of The Villages, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
