The Lone Grave
Syracuse Journal
July 1959
Six miles north of Syracuse, is a lone grave containing the remains of Amm Glacken, the first white woman buried in Hamilton County, which has been improved recently.

Gert Thompson, a former Syracuse resident now living in Horton, has installed a concrete apron and steel fence around the grave to protect if from the elements. The lone grave is situated on a hillside overlooking a small valley to the north and east on Highway 27, six miles north of Syracuse. Mrs Glacken was a pioneer woman who came to this country with one of the first group of settlers. The grave is situated on the west side, cornered by four concrete posts put there by the highway department.

The late Sterling Martin and John A Claypool, Bert Thompson's grandfather, were at the burial and helped throughout. Both stated to the best of their knowledge she was the first white woman buried in the county, it is the final resting place of Amm Glacken, who died January 1, 1888, at about 22 years of age. She died giving birth to her babe, a little girl, who survived and grew to adulthood.

A few years ago when Highway 27 was being resurfaced, the matter came up of moving the grave to the Syracuse Cemetery. The legal department at the Kansas Department Of Transportation ruled in order to move the grave it would require the consent of every living relative. The decision was that the grave will remain as it is, probably forever.
