Pontus was born to Petrus Eliasson on Haverod Farm, Bohuslan, Gotaland Sweden.
Made four trips to the US before emigrating. Served as a cabin boy. Name changed to Pontus Ross upon migrating to the US in 1864. The story is that he met someone on the ship with the surname "Ross" and perhaps felt Pontus Ross, would be a more Americanized name.

After losing horses moved to Junction City, Geary County, Kansas, to work to make enough money to replace the team and harness.
