POWHATTAN -- Cletuis "Chief" F Samqua, 75, Powhattan, died Tuesday, Feb 19, 2002, at his home.

Mr Samqua was a mechanic and had owned and operated Reservation Motors. He was an avid race car driver and was listed as a legend in the Kansas Auto Racing Museum in Chapman. He also helped found the Powhattan Fire Department.

He was born Aug 16, 1926, on the Kickapoo Reservation in Horton, the son of Louis and Emma Cadue Samqua.

Mr Samqua was a member of the Kickapoo Tribe and Kennekuk Church Religion, and he had been a former city marshal and city council member in Powhattan.

He married B-Jo Medicine-Horse in Horton. They were divorced. He later married Mary P Bridges in Hiawatha. They also were divorced.

Survivors include two sons, Cletuis "Sonnyman" Samqua II, Horton, and LaVern A Wabaunsee, Mayetta; four daughters, Mouse Medicine-Horse, Lansing, Staci S Harris, Topeka, Julie M Samqua, Wichita, and Judy L Samqua, Powhattan; a brother, Edward D Samqua, Topeka; a sister, Bertha Lieb, Horton; 14 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
