Obituary:
SCOTT CITY - Thomas A Gruver, 90, died Friday, July 19, 2002, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas. He was born February 17, 1912, in Russell County, the son of Sanford L and Mary E Baldwin Gruver. At the age of 4, the family moved to Scott County. He attended grade school and high school in Manning, Kansas and earned bachelor of science and education degrees from Fort Hays State University.He worked as a government range examiner in southwest Kansas from 1938 to 1939, was a high school teacher at Shallow Water, Kansas from 1940 to 1946 and became superintendent for the grade school and high school for 4 1/2 years. In the mid-1950s, he was a teacher and superintendent at Missouri Flats, Kansas in Gove County for three years. In 1960, he was elected as Scott County representative to the State House of Representatives, where he served for six years. He became county commissioner in 1968 and served for eight years. Throughout his lifetime, he was a farmer and stockman. He had moved to Scott City in 2000 and belonged to the United Methodist Church of Scott City. On August 3, 1941, he married Neva Gassert at Washington, Kansas. She survives. He also is survived by a daughter, Arlita Hummelke, Highland, Kansas; sons, Gene Gruver, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Royce Gruver, Scott City, Kansas and Norval Gruver, Independence, Kansas; sisters-in-law, Eva Darlene Gruver, Ulysses, Kansas and Hilda Gruver, Scott City; a cousin; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and four brothers.

Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church Camp Lakeside Scholarship Fund or the Bryan Education Center Scholarship Fund, both in care of the funeral home.

Neva Merle Gruver, age 96, died Friday, March 8, 2013 at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas. She was born November 14, 1916 in Washington, Kansas the daughter of Roy E and Anna L Stolzer Gassert. A resident of Scott City since 1941, Neva had been a homemaker, a teacher and a bank bookkeeper & teller. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women both of Scott City, Kansas and the Kansas Wesleyan University Alumni Association. On August 3, 1941 she married Thomas A. Gruver in Washington, Kansas. He died July 19, 2002 in Scott City, Kansas.
Survivors Include: Three Sons, One Daughter, Eight Grandchildren, Ten Great-Grandchildren & One Great-Great-Grandchild. She was preceded in death by sisters Eva Chartier and Anna Stewart and a brother, Lester Gassert.
