Cadue Section * CEMETERY OVERVIEW

Kennekuk Indian Church Cemetery
Brown County,
Kansas

In the early years of the cemetery, there were family plots and the graves surrounded the church building. Early grave markers were made of wood and had a distinctive shape. Many markers were stolen by "historians" and "anthropologists" and sold to museums. Prairie fires and decay also caused the loss of many markers.

Later generations of grave diggers did not know precisely where people were buried, so to avoid disturbing graves, a new section was added to the cemetery wherein new graves were added in rows by date of interment. Burials in family plots virtually ceased.
