Born in Volhynia,Russia (now a part of the Ukraine) to Peter & Anna Jantz Schmidt. He arrived in the US with his parents and siblings in January 1875 and the Schmidt family settled in Barton County, Kansas. On July 27,1888 he married Maria Base, daughter of Jacob and Susanna Base. Samuel and Maria had nine children:

Susanna M Smith Siebert
Ben Smith
Luella Smith Regier
All of the children are buried in Bergthal Mennonite Cemetery , except, Lena Mae Smith who is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Newton, Harvey County, Kansas and Luella Smith Regier who is buried in Emmaus Mennonite Church Cemetery, Whitewater, Butler County, Kansas.
