Richard Roy McKinnis, age 77, of Warrensburg, Mo., passed away Monday, April 6, 2009, at the Missouri Veterans Home of Warrensburg.

He was born on July 2, 1931, the youngest of six children, in Fort Scott, Kan., and the son of Roy and Ruth (Kirker) McKinnis. His parents owned and operated a farm. He attended high school in Uniontown, Kan., where he played baseball, football and basketball.

After high school, Richard attended Fort Scott community College and Baker University. He received his Master's degree at Pittsburg State. Richard earned a Doctorate degree in Education Administration from the University of Kansas.

Dr. McKinnis served in the United States Army from April 1954 until January 1956. He spent 18 months in Korea and China. Richard was united in marriage to Wanda Bilyew in Fort Scott, Kan., on February 28, 1954, the same year he volunteered for the Army.

Upon his return from Korea, Richard worked as a high school teacher, principal and school administrator in Uniontown, Kan., while pursuing his Doctorate degree. He then relocated to Warrensburg in 1968 to become a professor at Central Missouri State University. He continued teaching Education Administration classes until his retirement in 1996. Richard had a gift for coaching and teaching young people during his career in education.

Richard was a Jayhawks and Mules fan. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching sports and spending time with family and friends. Richard spent many weekends quail hunting in Uniontown, Kan., with his two bird dogs, Freckles and Midge. He also liked fishing for crappie at Truman Lake with his buddies.

Richard was a member of the First Baptist Church in Warrensburg.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda McKinnis of Warrensburg; a son and a daughter and seven grandchildren; three sisters: Lucile Lewis and Jean O'Dell both of Fort Scott, Kan., and Virginia Hoyle of Broomfield, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Norman and Siegle McKinnis.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 9, 2009, at the First Baptist Church of Warrensburg. The Reverend Dennis Doyle officiated. Burial was held that afternoon the Uniontown Cemetery in Uniontown, Kan.

The family received friends in Warrensburg on Wednesday evening at the Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home in Warrensburg. And after the graveside service on Thursday in Uniontown at the First Baptist Church of Uniontown.
