Obituary
Robert Dale Harper, 88, died Saturday, November 17, 2007, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City. He was born August 25, 1919, in Tescott,Kansas to Louis and Eunice Wilson Harper, and grew up on a farm in Logan County while his father was helping to build US Highway 40. He attended country grade school and Monument High School in Monument before moving to Scott City in 1937. He graduated from Scott Community High School in 1938. On March 2, 1941, he married Margaret Lue "Margie" Chamberlain in Scott City,Kansas. In October 1943, Mr Harper joined the US Army, later serving with the 790th Engineer Petroleum Distribution Company in Normandy, northern France and the Rhineland before receiving his honorable discharge in 1946 as a tech sergeant. After returning to Scott City after the war, he eventually was hired at the Shallow Water Refinery and worked there until it closed in the early 1970s. While employed by the refinery, he rose to the position of assistant plant manager. In the late 1950s, he was one of a group of fathers who organized the Little League program in Scott City and was one of the program's original coaches. He also was a supporter of the Scott Community High School band program and had served as president of the Band Boosters Organization. He and his wife were charter members of Community Christian Church, where he served as greeter in his later years, and he also belonged to the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, both in Scott City. In addition to his wife, other survivors include son Terry Harper of Neodesha ; daughter Kathy S Koehn of Scott City,Kansas; two grandsons; four granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Wilburn, Harold and Roy; and sisters, Nellie and Hazel.
