Samuel Bulger's first wife was Phoebe Jarvis (1840-1866); they had two children Alexander A. (1863- ) and Phoebe (1866- ). Samuel then married Melissa Berman; her first husband was Alexander A. Sloan who was serving in the Civil War when he died a prisoner of war at Andersonville Confederate Prison, GA, on September 25, 1864. Melissa and Alexander Sloan had one child Alexander a Sloan (1862-). Samuel Bulger and Melissa had two children James A. (1869- ) and Jenny A. (1871- )

In 1860 Samuel lived in Tuscarawas Co, Ohio in with his parents. His sister Mary Ann Bulger Thompson and their parents remained there and are buried there. Four of the Bulger brothers served in the Civil War; Benjamin (1817-1896), Henry (1829-1825), SAMUEL (1838-1814), and John F. (1825-1907). Benjamin Bulger had two sons that also served in the War; Jeremiah (1840-1920), and Benjamin F. ( ) When Samuel enlisted in the army 8/30/1862, he was 23 years old. He Enlisted as a Private into "A" Co. OH 104th Infantry. He was promoted to Cpl. 5/3/1865, and Mustered Out 6/17/1865. He left Ohio then went to Michigan returned to Ohio then to Indiana and finally settled in Kansas in 1884.
