He went to work in the local coal mines when 14 years old. After he had been working there 12 years, the roof of the mine caved in covering him, and breaking his back which left him paralyzed from the hips down; after which he never was able to walk with out the aid of crutches.
He worked for the city in various jobs for over 25 years, and was last employed as night watchman at the Leavenworth County courthouse.
