Kansan, Thursday, April 14, 1887

The funeral of the late J. R. Duncan, Sunday, took place at the hour advertised. The Knights Templar's, preceded by the Newton band, marched from the Masonic Hall to the residence of the departed, where they received the remains, and escorted them and mourners to the Baptist church where the service was read. An excellent sermon was preached by Rev. Tuttle. After the church service all further exercises were turned over to the Knights Templar, who led by Congressman Peters and W. M. Shaver repeated their beautiful ceremony, and which was continued at the grave. And everything passed off pleasantly.

From Family Search records: The father of James Richard was James Madison Duncan who married Mary Bell. James Madison was born Oct., 21, 1784 in Culpepper County Virginia, he died 1878 in Logan County Kentucky.
