James moved with his family to Ohio at the age of twelve years where he remained until the opening of the Civil War. First he enlisted in what was was known as the "Ohio Squirrel Hunters." He later enlisted in Co. C, 125th Ohio Volunteers in September 25, 1862 which was known throughout the war as "Opdyke's Tigers." The regiment was a part of the Army of the Cumberland. He served most of the time as color guard and was twice wounded, once at Chattanooga and again at Resaca. He was discharged at the close of the war and resided near Mecca, Ohio, until 1871 when he came to Kansas and settled on a farm in Marion county. In 1889 he and his family moved to Newton and engaged in the mercantile business. Children James, Sam, Roy, Iva and Lillian.
