Robert divorced his second wife, Ann, in May of 1884. Grounds were supposedly drunkenness and lewd behavior. He was ordered by the court to pay her $1,540.00, a large amount of money for the time. She was to vacate the family home. His family was scandalized by this and Robert moved to Eureka Springs, Arkansas in 1886. He lived in Arkansas until his death in 1894. His son, William, brought his body back to Newton for burial.
