Three Children Die in Fire
One of the saddest tragedies ever to befall this community occurred about 6:30 o'clock Sunday morning when the three small children of Mr. and Mrs. Blake Hibbard perished in their burning home. The children were: Hugh, aged8; Marjorie, aged 7; and I. J., aged 4.
Mr. and Mrs. Hibbard, who live on a farm seven miles southwest of Toronto, went to the barn some 100 yards from the house to do their morning milking. Blake's father, C. E. Hibbard, was just finishing milking as they arrived and he waited some ten minutes until they were finished. Charlie and Mrs. Hibbard discovered the burning house as they came out the barn door, the fire apparently starting from an exploding coal oil stove. All three rushed to the house and tried to enter the upstairs room with a ladder where the children were sleeping, but fire pouring out the house openings made it impossible. The children apparently perished by suffocation from fumes and smoke as they slept.
The Toronto fire department and friends and neighbors wet down the smoldering ashes and recovered the bodies from the cellar late in the afternoon. This tragedy has touched the hearts of every person in the community and the deepest sympathy is extended by all to the bereaved parents.
