The Salina Journal
1 March 1939
Despite valiant efforts, an oxygen tank-wearing crew aboard a snowplow lost a race with death Tuesday morning when the group split their way through drifts hip deep to Culver in an attempt to bring aid to George Gray, age 35, Shellabarger station master there.
Gray died a bare 10 minutes before the rescue party arrived as a result of heart trouble following pneumonia. A. F. Frieson, W. C. Nichols and Robert Jay, of Shellabarger Mills, first contemplated making the trip on horseback but through cooperation of the railroad, which offered a snowplow and crews, the party was able to arrive in Culver less than an hour following their departure from Salina late Tuesday morning.
