Ellsworth County
Kansas

White over the brick reads "Mother Bickerdyke Home" on each side. Area is now a retirement community. This appeared to be the only part of the original home.

The Bickerdyke Home consisted of a 25 room hospital; 30 room barracks; 15 brick cottages; an 8 room cottage for staff; a church; a commissary; several barns, sheds, and outbuildings, and a water tower.

The Women's Relief Corp used the original buildings and 160 acres here as a self-sustaining home for the widows and orphans of Civil War veterans. They named the home in Mother Bickerdyke's honor in 1897. She never lived here but made many visits. In 1952 the home closed, and the remaining occupants were mustered out to the Dodge City Soldiers Home. Today, it's a retirement home and is called Good Samaritan Society - Ellsworth Village

The Bickerdyke Cemetery occupies one acre of the property and 32 women were buried there from 1902 to 1919. In 1962 a monument was erected with the names of the 32 women as their graves were not individually marked.
