OBIT
Minneapolis Messenger
June 16, 1887

Hattie Shaw, eldest daughter of J.S. and Emily Shaw, was born July 15, 1866, and departed this life June 1st, 1887, at the home of her parents, near Tescott, Ottawa County, Kansas. Sister Hattie was of good old Methodist stock, her grandfather, Jonathan Shaw was one of the pioneer Methodist preachers of Indiana, and one or more of his sons are following his footsteps.

J.S. Shaw came to Kansas when Hattie was three years old, so that her early childhood was spent amidst the privations and hardships of the early settlement of the state. Naturally of a cheerful disposition, she was the sunshine of the home, and the light and the life of the young people's society in which she moved. She united with the M.E. Church at the age of 18, since which time her life has been that of the consistent Christian. The funeral services were conducted by the writer in the presence of a very large company of sympathizers, friends and neighbors. The text – "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God," was one of her own choice. The family is not alone in their sorrow and bereavement, for the church and neighbors feel that they too have been bereft in the loss of so sweet, so young and active a life. But we will wait our crossing over to the meeting that has no interruption.
I. McDowell.
