Married Ellen Farnsworth October 18, 1863 Council Grove, Lyon County, Kansas.
(She was born October 12, 1850 in England and died Ellsworth, Ellsworth County, Kansas February 22, 1930 and is buried in Hutchinson, Reno County, Kansas)
He enlisted in the Civil War September 23, 1862 at Central City, Colorado. He was a blacksmith in the Civil War and from his Civil War papers was shot while shoeing a horse for the government in "Friendly Fire". It is recorded that one of his fellow men was shooting at an Indian and hit PVT Roberts. They were unable to remove ball from his lung and when he died it was still in him. (This event happened at FT Lyon, Colorado on December 12, 1862.) He was discharged at Independence, Missouri, May 11,1864.
He was a blacksmith in Cedar Point, Chase County, KS before moving to Greenwood County, KS after 1880.
