Freddie was the son of Frederick Mentor Hurd and Jane Josephine (Phillips) Hurd. He was the brother of Harriet Eliza, Joseph Henry, Frances Adele, Lydia Vilitia, Calista Cora Ada, Emma Josephine, Charles Lewis, Jessie Edna, and Herbert Eugene.
Freddie's father was a Civil War pensioner who migrated to Kansas from Illinois, and moved on down to Oklahoma after living a few years in Greenwood County, Kansas.
