Sophia was born in Wildenschwert, north of Knappendorf, near Ceska Trebova, Bohemia (now Czech Republic)to Anton Koblitz and his wife Josepha Metzke or Matzke.
The family came to America in 1852, arriving in New York on Dec 7 of that year, on the ship Jason, with two sons as well. Another son was born later.
There were at least 60 passengers from the same district on the ship with the Koblitz family.
She married Peter Joseph Koelzer in 1859. They were the first couple to be married in the new church of St Mary's at St Benedict's, Kansas.
