Louise May Mefford of Iola died Saturday, Jan. 29, at Allen County Hospital at the age of 76.
She was born Aug. 31, 1923, on a farm near Elsmore, the daughter of Lloyd and Golda Ard Cox. She was a graduate of Elsmore High School. On Oct. 27, 1944, she married Harry Berdean Mefford. They made their home in Elsmore, where they operated a grocery store for a number of years. She then worked at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant in Parsons before going to work as a meat inspector for the government. They were living in Ottawa when he died in 1987. She retired in 1988 after working 18 years as an inspector and then moved to Iola.
She was an avid quilter and delivered meals on wheels.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by a son, Larry of Grand Island, Neb.; a daughter, Carolyn Spencer of Iola; two brothers, William Cox of Wichita and Dale Cox of Humboldt; a sister, Evelyn Roberts of Osawatomie; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A twin brother, Leonard Cox died earlier.
Services were held on Wednesday (Feb.2) at First Baptist Church in Iola. The Rev. Waylon Ingle officiated. Burial was in Elsmore Cemetery. Memorials were suggested to the First Baptist Church of Iola.
The family received friends on Tuesday (Feb.1) evening at Waugh-Yokum & Fiskel Funeral Home in Iola.
