Etched in stone.....Mrs. E. Hill
Daughter of Clement P Banks, Sr. (1799-1853) and
Catherine Lea Vanhook (c1804-1875).
She married first in Adair Co KY Richard Brown (1817 KY - 1858? IL?), June 12, 1844. He was killed (said to have been murdered) abt 1858. She then married James "Bud" Hill on March 20, 1860 in Hire, McDonough, IL.
Her daughter Emmaline's marriage record gives her father's name as James Pettit. She was born 9 months 11 days after her mother's marriage to James Hill, so we have to conclude that Hill/Pettit are the same person using different surnames for unknown reasons.
The family was in the 1860 Blandinville, McDonough, IL census as "Hill", and in the 1870 Marmaton, Bourbon, KS census as "Pettit".
James Hill/Pettit not found in the 1880 census, so presumably they were divorced or he died between 1870-1880.
Except for the 1870 "Pettit" census, Elizabeth always went by the surname "Hill" after 1860.
Elizabeth's children were:
Deroy Brown (1845 - 1895)
Laura Ann Brown Wagy (1847 - 1937)
Cornelius Brown (1848 - 1922)
Martha Katherine Brown Wallis (1851 - 1938)
John Clement Brown (1853 - 1905)
Martin Washington Brown (1855 - 1922)
Mary Manery Brown Fisher (1857 - 1945)
Emmaline Pettit Holtsclaw (1861 - 1932)
William Edward Hill (1864 - 1904)
Ida Marinda Hill Odell (1866 - 1919)
The stone next to Elizabeth is that of her son William Edward Hill. Then beside Edward are Eva and Addie Brown, daughters of Martin W. and Amanda M. Brown. Martin was Elizabeth's son.
