Obituary
Howard E Shafer, 79, farmer and stockman, died Friday,December 3, 1999 at Gove County Medical Center in Quinter. He was the father of Roxie Truan of Newton. He was born October 14, 1920, on the family farm in Sheridan County to Bert C and Nell Richards Shafer. He married Freda Shipley September 14, 1941, at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Studley. She survives of the home. He was a US Army World War II veteran, serving in the 6th Infantry from 1942 to 1945.
He was a member of Wheatland VFW Post No 2864 of Grainfield in Grinnel and Park, and Quinter Senior Citizen Center.
He attended Church of the Brethren in Quinter and also attended Highland Rural Sheridan County school in Sheridan County. Other survivors include: another daughter, Carol Hartman of Park; 3 sisters, Ruth Anderson of The Woodlands, Texas, Maxine McClelland of Hoxie and Mary Lancaster of Lakewood, Colorado; 4 grand - children; 1 great-grandson; and 2 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Morris Shafer and Charlie Shafer; and 2 sisters, Mable Martens and Hazel Walden.
