*Obituary
From the Cortland (KS) Register, Friday, May 6, 1892:
Mrs Chas Stewart and Mrs.Fred Elliott, returned from Eminence, Kansas, Saturday morning, where they had gone in response to a message announcing the death of a sister, Mrs McCarty. The deceased lady was a daughter of Mr and Mrs J Sullivan north of town, and was favorably known in this community. The friends of the bereft extend their sympathy.
Mrs McCarty was 29 years, 8 mo. and 6 days old. Her death was caused by heart failure. The following extract is taken from the Eminence Call:
"DEATH, with a stern relentless hand looked in and thinned our little band. Last Saturday morning Mrs. Mary McCarty, wife of our fellow townsman William McCarty, was in the prime of life, and to all appearances, well and healthy, but by three o'clock she was cold and stiff in death. Just what the immediate cause was, it is impossible to tell. Mr. McCarty had gone to Dighton with the mail, leaving Mrs. McCarty alone with the little girls. About one o'clock she sent for Mrs. Killson, and at two o'clock sent for Dr. Minner, who did everything for her that could be done, but she grew rapidly worse and at three o'clock died. She was buried in our cemetery Monday, a large concourse of friends folowing her remains to the grave. She leaves a heart broken husband and three little daughters, the oldest nine years and the youngest four, to mourn her departure. The family have the sympathy of the entire community in their very great bereavement."

Mary was survived by her husband William, her parents Jeremiah and Lavina Sullivan of Cortland, Ks; four daughters, Bertha, Goldie, Nellie and Edna; two sisters, Julia (Chas.) Stewart and Nellie (Fred) Elliott. One sister, Elizabeth (Clarence) Rock preceded her in death.
