One of the grand early day pioneer women of Harvey county, Mrs. H. W. Prouty, passed away peacefully in her sleep at an early hour this morning, at the farm home, on the original homestead, northwest of Newton. Mrs. Prouty was past 85 years of age.
Born in New Boston, Illinois, September 1, 1854, the daughter of Cyrus and Jane [Myers] Mannon, she came to Harvey county with the other Prouty families in August, 1871, as a bride, having been married in Illinois to H. W. ["Cap"] Prouty on July 23 of that year. They celebrated their sixty-eighth wedding anniversary last July, with their living children, Arthur Prouty and Mrs, Nita McFarlane and other relatives and a few friends at the home of Mrs. McFarlane. Their other daughter, Mrs. June Harwood preceding her mother in death by three years.
Mr. and Mrs. Prouty seem almost members of the newspaper family, having been correspondents for this paper about 67 years.
The Rev. F. U. Moyer of Hesston will be in charge of the funeral services at the Methodist church in Hesston at 10:00 o'clock Tuesday morning, Dec. 26. Entombment will be made in Greenwood Abbey.
