Daniel Henry Answoth

When he was quite young his father moved to Medina, Ohio, where Daniel grew to manhood. He was married to Charlotte Reilley at Dayton, Ohio, on Thanksgiving day, Nov 26, 1863. Of this union three children were born, Harry, Troop and Blanche. He was one of the pioneers of Kansas, coming to the state in 1871. He spent a few months in Augusta and then moved to Newton and homesteaded on the land on which the old home on West Twelfth street still stands. He maintained a land business here for years, riding to Wichita on horseback to attend to business. He was one of the first sets of county officers, having been appointed clerk of the court, in January 1873, serving two years. After his wife died in 1902 he went to Phoenix, Arizona, where he had since been engaged as a mining promoter.

He was married to Phoebe Marie Haynes, Jan 3, 1910, at Chicago. She was at Oberlin, Ohio, and he was making plans to join her when the end came. He had been suffering from asthma for some time and this trouble affected his heart. He was often compelled to get up during the night and sit in a chair for relief in breathing. He did this Sunday night before he died. During the next forenoon the young man who was with him called a physician and a one o'clock in the afternoon they took him to a hospital, where within ten minuets he passed away, Monday afternoon, November 20. He suffered little if any pain. His wife, two sons, of Washington, DC, and brother Avery, of St Johns, Kan, were unable to come for the funeral. Miss Blanche feels deeply grateful for all the kind assistance rendered and the many kindly remembrances shown.

Daniels son Harry died in 1872 after getting bit by a rattlesnake.

Newton Kansan Republican, Tuesday, June 3, 1902

Charlotte Amelia Reilley was born in Kingston, Ontario, in July, 1844. She and Daniel Ainsworth were married Thanksgiving day, 1866, at Dayton, Ohio. They moved to Augusta, Kansas, in 1870 where Mr Ainsworth opened a land office. The following year they moved to Newton and settled on a homestead where their present home is located on West Twelfth street. The house built there at that time was probably the first in the city. For almost a third of a century Mr and Mrs Ainswoth have been prominent citizens of our town and county, he having been one of the organizers of the county and first county clerk.

Mrs Ainsworth was a lifetime member of the Episcopal church, though her lingering illness prevented her form taking an active part in the work of the church. Several years ago she had a severe attack of pneumonia since which time she has been troubled with bronchial catarrh and unable to remain in our climate during the winter months. It has been the custom for several winters for one of the family to accompany her to Phoenix, Arizona, where she found much relief. Last fall while visiting in Buffalo, New York, she became worse and Mr Ainsworth and she hurried to Phoenix where they have been until a few days ago. She evidently felt the end was near and wanted to come home. It was thought that she might be brought here but the trip proved to much for her.

Besides her husband, Mrs Ainsworth is survived by three children, Miss Blanche, who has always resided in Newton is an example of beautiful devotion to an invalid mother. Harry, who for years a department clerk in Washington, is now a traveling salesman for a book company in St Louis. Troop was at one time private secretary to Judge S R Peters when he was in congress, and now is a clerk in a land office.

The funeral was held yesterday from the funeral parlors of L F Schumacher with Rev Dr Beatty officiating. Mrs Thos Downey, Mrs Ed Savage, T W Randall and J R Lowe composed the quartet that furnished the music. Some very beautiful floral designs were sent, principal of which was a bouquet of calla lilies presented by the Young People's society of the Evangelical church of which Miss Blanche is a member. Mr Ainsworth and Miss Blanche appreciated very much the kindness of those who helped in the funeral services and remembered them with flowers.
