Kansan, Thursday, February 24, 1944.
A brief but impressive service was conducted at the Caveny family lot in Greenwood cemetery Wednesday afternoon, Feb, 23, 3:00, at which the urn containing the ashes of J Franklin Caveny was deposited in a concrete receptacle over which was placed stone of granite. The service was attended by a few relatives, intimate friends and officers of Newton lodge, No 142, A F & A M, the lodge having charge of the service. George J Hetzel gave the committal service, followed by prayer by Rev George W Nelson, pastor of the Presbyterian church, church of Mr Caveny's affiliation.

J Franklin Caveny was born in Newton, Feb 6, 1876 to pioneer parents Mr and Mrs J L Caveny. He died at Staten Island, N Y, Jan 13, 1944. He had been stricken with a fatal illness at Lewistown, Pa, Nov 1, while en route east filling entertainment dates. Funeral services were conducted in New York.

He was married about 35 years ago to Maude Wood who survives. They traveled together ever since giving chalk talks, clay modeling, theatrical acts and music. Of recent years they appeared largely on college courses and were among the most popular entertainers on the American stage. He is also survived by three sisters Mrs Frank Trouslot, of Newton, Mrs E L Odell, Kansas City, Mo and Mrs Ed Hayn, Prince Bay, Long Island, N Y.

While Mr Cavney grew up in Newton, he began his career as a public entertainer early in life and traveled in every state and some foreign countries, always returning to the old home town every few years at least, at which time he would appear at meetings of clubs, societies and churches, donating programs of entertainment, and never failing to draw large audiences. He was polished ans genteel, clean of habit and honor to his profession.

In 1914, J D Nicholson commissioned Caveney to paint a large mural for the First Presbyterian Church at 7th and Main, Newton. The mural is entitled "The Christ Child Among the Doctors," and contains the message, "To Mrs Gaston Boyd, with sincere regards, J Frank Caveny, 1914." The mural was removed when the church was razed in 1964 and installed in the new church located at 900 Columbus Ave.
