JOSEPH RICKMAN DIED YESTERDAY

Yesterday morning at ten o'clock, death came to Joseph Rickman at his home on West Ninth street, where he had been suffering for some weeks with inflammation of the bowels.
He had reached the very advanced age of eighty-nine years which with the intense heat made his chance of recovery all the more meager. The funeral service will be held from the home tomorrow tomorrow morning at ten o'clock and Judson Kilpatrick Post of GAR will have charge, he having been a member of that body since 1887.
Mr Rickman served his country in Company I of the 14th United States Colored Infantry from April 1864 to March 1866. He has been a resident of Newton for many years, and until the past few years had a shoe repairing shop.
He is survived by his wife, two sisters and a brother and a large family of sons, and a daughter, Mrs William Downing.

Mrs Mary Rickman was born in Salem, Virginia, February 1, 1843, and was married to J Anderson in 1856. To this union was born four children, Mrs Amanda Turner, Noah Anderson, Miss Eva Anderson and a son who died in infancy. She was left a widow at the close of the Civil war. She was married to Joseph Rickman at Rice Town, Ohio, in 1866, who preceded her to the great beyond four years ago, August 13,1911. To this union was born seven children, Frederick, who died in infancy, and six of whom survive her. William, U S, Nathan, Phillip, Robert, and Mrs.Edna Downing. Also two step sons, Patrick and Jacob Rickman. She came to Kansas in 1877 and settled in Marion County; moved to Newton, Kansas in 1882 and located on West Ninth street where she resided until the death of her husband, after which she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Edna Downing. She was converted and united with the First Baptist church, there being no colored churches here. Later she united with the C. M. E. church of which she was a faithful member until the Lord called her home. She was a devoted wife and mother in every sense of the words, kind and loving and always willing to do for others and especially devoted to children all of whom loved her. She never complained during her illness, but passed away Saturday, April 10, in a peaceful sleep from which she never awakened. She leaves to mourn her death the above named children, thirteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a host of friends who loved her.
