INMAN - Jacob D "J D" Friesen, 97, died peacefully in his sleep in his room at Pleasant View Home, Inman, Kansas on March 29, 2009.

He was born October 19, 1911, in McPherson County, the son of the Rev Dietrich and Marie Wiens Friesen. A lifetime resident of Inman, he attended local schools and was a 1929 graduate of Hoffnungsau Preparatory School in Inman.

He was a lifelong member of the Bethel Mennonite Church. In 1936, he started a blacksmith shop in Inman with his uncle Pete Friesen. In later years, the hardware needed for blacksmithing became the J D Friesen Hardware store, where hardware and appliances were sold. Finally, in its last years it became the J D Friesen True Value Hardware store, which he sold when he retired in 1975.

On April 4, 1937, he married Hilda M Neufeld, who was a co-owner and operator of the J D Friesen True Value Hardware business. Hilda preceded him in death on February 3, 2002.

He is survived by: a son, and daughter-in-law of Bluffton, Ohio; three grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, and a brother & a sister-in-law, and was preceded in death by sisters, Agnes Goering and Katheryn Wiens, and by brothers, Willie D Friesen and Martin Friesen.
