Betty was born Aug. 15, 1931, to Alfred W. and Lilly M. (Heinze) Katzenmeier, in Ellsworth. She was reared and educated in Winfield, graduating from Winfield High School in 1950.

Betty married Leonard D. Herman on Aug. 1, 1953, in Springdale, Ark. The couple made their home in Wichita, then Winfield before settling in Arkansas City. Betty and Leonard owned and operated the Flying Burger and South Summit Carry Out for many years until Leonard’s passing in 1994.

Betty loved spending time at the family cabin at Sunset Lake, but most of all she cherished her family and grandchildren. She was a longtime member of Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leonard; a son, Allen Herman; and a brother, Al Katzenmeier.

Survivors include her daughter, Nancy Free and husband, Don, of Pittsburg; sisters, Donna Miller, of Wellington, and Shirley Richardson, of Winfield; grandchildren, Traver Herman and wife, Brandi, of Arkansas City, Brandon Herman, of Palm Beach, Fla., and Tara Bolinger and husband, Nate, Megan Newton and husband, Zach, and Carly Free, all of the Kansas City area; great-grandchildren, Korbyn and Brogan Herman, Brooks Newton, Leo and Elsie Bolinger, and one on the way; and several nieces and nephews.
