In the 1870 Census John and Sarah along with daughter Lydia and son Robert E. lived in Washington, Indiana and his occupation was a wagon maker. The family may have lived a short time in Illinois where their fourth daughter Almeda Jane was born in 1873. In 1878 the family moved to Kansas, this according to the obituary of his daughter Martha Cornelia Austin-Heywood. In the 1880 census John was a farmer and the family was living in Gypsum, Salina, Kansas and by 1885 Kansas census they were living Culver, Kansas. They continue to farm.
In 1910 John is not working and three of the sons are living with them, Norval, Lloyd and Raymond. None of the sons are farming all working in retail stores.

Sarah Jane Green was the daughter of Elizabeth "Betsey" Matilda Mead and Robert E. Green. She was born in Indiana and married John Malix Austin in Washington, Washington County, Indiana on the 8th of November 1868. According to the obituary of her daughter the family moved to Kansas in 1878 They were the parents of twelve children.
