Hazel Ruth Pool, 83, Iola died Monday, Feb. 24, 1997 at the Countryside Estates Nursing Center, Iola. She was born Oct. 5, 1913, on a farm eight miles south of Bronson, the daughter of Odie E. and Lula Turner Pool.
She was a graduate of Bronson High School in 1931 and later graduated from Pittsburg State University, with both a bachelors and masters degree in education. She taught school for 42 years before her retirement. She taught at Blazing Star, Ozark, Bethel, South Fairview, Porterville, Bronson, and Gas City Elementary. After retiring from teaching, she worked for eight years at the Allen County Community college as a librarian. She taught Sunday School at the Bronson, South Fairview, and Wesley United Methodist Church where she was a member. She was also a member of the Allen County Retired Teachers Association.
Survivors include two sisters, Illah Thompson, Moran; and Lucile Heard, Iola; five nephews; six nieces; and a number of great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by an infant brother.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel, 16 North Buckeye, Iola with the Reverend John C. Thompson officiating. Burial will be in the Hatch Cemetery, located near Uniontown.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Wesley United Methodist church or the Iola Public Library.
