Marland C. Highbaugh, age 91, a former resident of Presbyterian Village, died Monday, August 31, 2009, at Fort Scott Medicalodge. He was born January 18, 1918, in Wellington, Kansas, the son of Martin Cleveland Highbaugh and Zoe Walker Highbaugh. Marland married Annabel Louise Martin on May 12, 1940, at Bronson, Kansas. She preceded him in death on January 18, 2002. In his earlier years, Marland was an avid athlete who played semi-pro baseball and was invited to play for the St. Louis Cardinals; with encouragement from his father, Marland took up farming instead. He worked as a farmer/stockman for several years prior to going to work for the Production Credit Association. He had served as Senior Vice-President at both the Chanute and Garden City offices. Marland also was a real estate agent and performed appraisals. Marland had his pilot's license and enjoyed flying in addition to golfing, boating, fishing, hunting and playing cards. He was a member of the Fort Scott United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, Martin L. Highbaugh, and wife, Linda, Payson, Arizona, two daughters, Joan Ermel and husband, Elwin, Bronson, Kansas and Louise Montague and husband, Fred, Scottsdale, Arizona. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Teresa Smith, Jimmie Ermel and Sandra Markoski, and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Jerry Moore and a granddaughter, Kelly Montague.

Rev. Paul Babcock and Pastor David Shrum conducted funeral services Thursday evening, September 3, 2009, at the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel. The family received friends before the service on Thursday at the chapel. Following funeral services there was cremation. Memorials are suggested to Hospice Compassus or the Fort Scott or Bronson United Methodist Church.
