Rosa Kathryn Holt, 96, Uniontown, Kan., died Saturday morning, May 9, 1998, at Fort Scott Mercy Hospital. She was born in Uniontown on Aug. 27, 1901, the eighth of nine children, to Siegle and Effie Mae Burris McKinnis. During her high school years in Uniontown she clerked at Stroud's Store.
She married Samuel Edwin Holt in fort Scott on Dec. 31, 1921, the two served in the Uniontown Post Office, she as a Postal Clerk and he as Postmaster. They attended the First Missionary Baptist Church of Uniontown, the Church of God Holiness, Fort Scott, and Hope Chapel Assembly of God, Bronson, Kan. They were instrumental in development and strong supporters of Fort Scott Christian Heights Bible School.
They were parents of twin sons, James Samuel and Milton Lynne Holt. James died at the age of seven months, Lynne, who retired in 1988 after 42 years in newspapering, started his career at the Fort Scott Tribune and spent 20 years at the Wichita Eagle and Beacon, a Political Writer, Assistant Managing Editor and Managing Editor.
Her husband, Sam, proceded her in death on Nov. 11, 1983.
She is survived by a son, Lynne Holt and his wife, Sheryl, of Phoenix, Ariz.; three grandchildren, seven-great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter; and a sister, Mrs. Charles Ruth Smith of Uniontown, who observed her 100th birthday on April 25, 1998.
Funeral services were Tuesday morning, May 12, at the First Missionary Baptist Church of Uniontown, Kan., with the Rev. Shaun Matako and the Rev. John I. Page officiating. Burial was in the Uniontown Cemetery under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home. The family received friends Monday evening at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home.
The family encourages memorial contributions to either the Fort Scott Christian Heights Sam and Rosa Holt Scholarship Fund, The First Missionary Baptist Church of Uniontown, or the United Methodist Church of Uniontown.
