Edward "Owen" Martin was the oldest son of James Edward Martin and Helen Viola Robb. He was born on a farm near Riverton, Iowa south of Sidney.
Owen was a farmer in Fremont County, Iowa, when he married Ellen Jane Taylor, a school teacher in Page County, Iowa. They were married on May 22, 1942, at the Old Stone Church in Independence, Missouri.
Owen farmed in the Shenandoah and Imogene areas in Iowa until 1946 when he and Ellen moved to his farm south of Uniontown, Kansas. They had two children: Bob and Mary Ellen.
Owen was active in his church and community. He served on the school board, the Federal Land Bank Board, and the Soil Conservation Board.
Owen's wife, Ellen, died in 1996. Owen died at the age of 81 at a hospital in Fort Scott, Kansas. His death was caused by a heart attack.
