*Obituary

At the time of his death Mr. Prouty had reached the age of 93 years,8 months and 25 days. He grew to manhood on the same farm where he was born. On July 23, 1871, he was united in marriage to Miss Elvy Mannon, daughter of Cyrus Mannon and Jane Mannon, neighbors of the Prouty family, by Amos Prouty, justice of the peace at the home of the bride.
On August 5, 1871 they joined the Prouty colony bound for Kansas, and their new homesteads in covered wagons, the homesteads being located in what was later to become Harvey county. They arrived August 29, 1871, and located on the southwest quarter Sec. 20 T. 22 R1w, Emma township where he resided ever since, almost 71 years at the time of his death. The farm was called Cedar Nook, and was a landmark in that section, well improved, and Mr. Prouty always made a success of farming as long as he was physically able. He also taught school at districts 20 and 49 from 1876 to 1880.
Soon after the Prouty's came to the county, H. C. Ashbaugh started the Newton Kansan, and Cap as he was called began receiving the paper, and also began sending in rural correspondence from his neighborhood. He kept that up until the last few weeks prior to his passing.
H. W. and Elvy had three children, Arthur T., Nita McFarlane and June R. Prouty Harwood.
