William was born in Greene County, PA. His first wife was Susanna Thompson who died 24 September 1865 in Rockford Valley, Bourbon, KS.
In 1862, he enlisted in the Twelfth Kansas Volunteer Infantry, Company K, serving till 1865.
His second wife was Nancy Smith Henton Mason.

William, married Susannah Thompson in 1847 in Ohio. His second wife was Mrs. Nancy Henton in 1873. He served in the 12th Kansas Volunteer Infantry 1862-1865. He had four daughters and four sons.
