Ruth Marie McKinnis, 95, Uniontown's oldest citizen, died Monday, August 17, 1992, at Fort Scott Mercy Hospital, where she had been a patient since Aug. 5.
She was born February 5, 1897, in Uniontown, KS the daughter of Charles W. and Lula Mae Anderson Kirker. She married Robert "Roy" McKinnis on December 27, 1916, in Fort Scott. He died February 19, 1973.
Mrs. McKinnis grew up in Uniontown and attended Uniontown schools and was a member of the first graduating class of the high school. She was a member of the first basketball team of the school.
Mrs. McKinnis was a pianist at the First Missionary Baptist Church in Uniontown for 60 years and for many years she played for the residents of the Marmaton Valley Rest Home.
She was active in ABW and other church activities. She taught school one year before her marriage. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America. Her life centered around family and church. Quilting and fishing were favorite pastimes.
Survivors included two sons, Siegle McKinnis, Uniontown, and Dr. Richard McKinnis, Warrensburg, MO.; three daughters, Mrs. I.K. (Virginia) Hoyle, Bloomfield, CO, Mrs. Merlin (Jean) O'Dell, rural Uniontown and Mrs. Joe J. (Lucille) Lewis, Fort Scott; one sister, Mrs. Harve (Grace) McKinnis, Springfield, CO; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren. A son, Norman, died in 1979. Also preceding her in death were a brother, Earl Kirker, and three grandsons.
Services were held Friday, August 21, 1992, at the First Missionary Baptist Church in Uniontown. Burial was in the Uniontown Cemetery.
