Reta Marie Jones, 73, Fort Scott, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 1997, at the Countryside Estate Nursing Home, Iola. She was born at rural Bronson, March 6, 1924, the daughter of Roy Lester and Mabel Evelyn Watson Nichols. She married Charles L. "Pete" Jones at Uniontown, March 22, 1943. In 1977 he preceded her in death.

She was a graduate of Bronson High School in 1941 and a life long resident of Bourbon County, with the exception of two years, when she and her husband lived in Florida and California while he was in the Army during World War II. During her married life, she and her husband loved to travel, taking their children with them, and later their grandchildren. After seeing the USA, they decided Colorado was their favorite place, and traveled there several times a year. Following the death of her husband, she worked in the Register of Deeds Office in the Bourbon County Courthouse until her retirement. She enjoyed bowling and bowled on four leagues a week and was the secretary of two of those leagues. She enjoyed traveling on group tours throughout the U.S. and one trip to Mexico plus several trips to National Bowling Tournaments. She was a member of the Bourbon County Genealogical Library. She was a member of the Uniontown United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Larry (Evelyn L.) Christensen, Anaheim, Calif; one son, Gary R. Jones, Moran; four grandchildren, Ms. Kelly L. Christensen Pritchard, Anaheim, Calif; Scott A. Christensen, Cedar Falls, Iowa; Sybil Lawson, Lawrence; and Tera McGuire, Osage Beach, MO; one great-grandson, Maxx Pritchard, Anaheim, Calif.; two sisters and their husbands, James and Thora Shinn, Iola; and Earl and Margaret Ruckman, Topeka; one brother and his wife, Donald and Brenda Nichols, Wichita; a brother-in-law and his wife, Robert and Nona Jones, Fort Scott; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pastor Deborah McDurmond, pastor of the Uniontown United Methodist Church, conducted funeral services on Wednesday in the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel. Burial was in the Uniontown Cemetery. The family received friends on Tuesday evening in the Cheney Witt Chapel. Memorials were suggested to the charity of the donors choice.
